Endings

There are several ways that Heavy Rain can end. One ending may be having all the characters die and not finding the Origami Killer. Another may be having all the characters survive and eventually finding him. The main points that decide the ending the player receives are who is alive, who is dead and whether Shaun Mars was saved or not.

Ethan Mars

Ending Title	Requirements	Epilogue Results
Ethan's Grave	Ethan dies at The Old Warehouse.	Shaun stands heartbroken over Ethan's grave. After a short time, he leaves with his mother. Madison and/or Scott may be seen leaning against a tree as the camera pans back if either of them survive.
A New Start	Ethan survives and evades arrest; Shaun is saved; Madison is either never kissed, rejected or dies.	Ethan and Shaun move to a new apartment and live happily ever after.
A New Life	Ethan survives and evades arrest; Shaun and Madison both live; Madison is kissed and forgiven, and survives.	Ethan continues dating Madison and lives happily ever after with her and Shaun in the same apartment depicted in A New Start.
Origami Blues	Ethan survives and evades arrest; Shaun dies; Madison is either never kissed, rejected or dies.	Ethan sits in the motel, depressed over Shaun's death. He takes out the gun from the Shark Trial and shoots himself.
Tears In the Rain	Ethan survives and evades arrest; Shaun dies; Madison is kissed, forgiven and survives.	Madison and Ethan are standing over Shaun's grave. Madison tries to comfort Ethan, saying that they will move away to somewhere it never rains, and that she wants to have a child with him. Ethan, unable to forgive himself for Shaun's death, tells Madison to give him a few minutes alone. As she leaves, she sees him take a gun from his pocket and shoots himself.
Helpless	Ethan is arrested and doesn't escape; Shaun dies.	Ethan is successfully framed as the Origami Killer and locked up in prison with dozens of origami figures littered around his cell. Unable to take the suffering any longer, Ethan hangs himself.
Innocent	Ethan is arrested and doesn't escape; Shaun lives.	Ethan's innocence is proven and he is released from prison, where he is able to have a fresh start with Shaun and Grace.

Madison Paige

Ending Title	Gameplay Conditions	Epilogue Results
Dead Heroine	Madison dies.	A news reporter named Britney Sanders stands at Madison's grave talking about her tragic death. Afterwards, she walks off complaining she doesn't want to be there. If Ethan is still alive, he can be seen leaning against a tree as the camera pans back.
Heroine	Ethan dies or rejects Madison or is arrested; Madison surives and reaches the warehouse; Shaun is saved.	Madison saves Shaun and is claimed as a heroine. She appears on a talk show and writes a book entitled "Heavy Rain." When she is signing the books, someone named Vincent says that she deserves a more "ferocious" adversary. When she looks up, he is gone.
Square One	Ethan dies or rejects Madison or is arrested; Madison survives, but either Shaun is dead or Madison doesn't reach the warehouse.	Madison's insomnia begins to get worse as she can't tell reality from her dreams. After Sam leaves another message on her phone (clearly worried about her) intruders surround her and the screen fades.

Norman Jayden

Ending Title	Gameplay Conditions	Epilogue Results
Uploaded	Jayden dies outside of the Smoking Mirrror epilgoue.	Captain Perry invites Blake to Jayden's funeral, which Blake happily declines - "Jayden and I didn't see eye to eye on much." Perry does not mind, allowing Blake to keep Jayden's ARI glasses. Blake uses the glasses and enjoys himself, until Jayden appears, much to the shock of Blake. This implies that Jayden, through overuse of the ARI, was in a sense, "uploaded" to it, and that every time somebody uses it, they will see him..
Resignation	Shaun and Jayden must survive, but Jayden does not make it to the old warehouse.	Unable to resolve the case, he resigns from the FBI, saying that he wants to live "something like a normal life." When his superior says that he has a promising career and can keep the ARI glasses because a newer model will become standard issue, he replies "They won't help me where I'm going; the real world." He then places the glasses on the desk and leaves.
Case Closed	Norman reaches the warehouse and survives; Shaun is saved.	Jayden is hailed as a hero and appears on a talk show to discuss the case. Later, he is seen in a bathroom contemplating a vial of Triptocaine, and flushes the vial down the toilet in disgust. Later he is seen in his office giving a report on the ARI glasses; however when he removes them he begins suffering from the side effects of his over-exposure to ARI. When he removes the glasses he still sees visions...miniature tanks that are pointing to shoot at him.
Smoking Mirror	Norman lives; no one reaches the warehouse and Shaun dies.	Norman is still in the ARI state without the glasses on and is talking to a therapist about how he just wants to forget what has happened, and Triptocaine is the most effective way he has found. The therapist says it is not a solution, and Norman replies he is not looking for a solution. He says he will see what happens when its all over. When he turns around, he sees that he was actually talking to an exact copy of himself, who says that it may never be over. Overwhelmed with guilt, Jayden gives into his Triptocaine addiction and dies of an overdose.

Scott Shelby

Ending Title	Gameplay Conditions	Epilogue Results
Origami's Grave	Scott dies in The Old Warehouse.	Lauren stands over Scott's grave, questioning why he would commit such horrible acts. disgusted, she asks how he could be with her after killing her son. She damns him for his actions, spits on his grave and walks away. If Lauren is dead, it will simply show Scott's grave.
A Mother's Revenge	Scott and Lauren Winter survive.	Lauren confronts Scott on the street, telling him she figured out he was the one who killed her son. She honors her promise to her son that she'd kill the man who murdered him. She then takes out a gun, aims at Scott's head and shoots as the screen fades black.
Unpunished	Scott must survive and Lauren must get killed in Trapped.	Scott walks through a street in the rain getting away with all his crimes.
